Addressing the conference

Catherine Ashton visited Egypt this week where she met with President Morsi and gave the key note address to a conference called "Egyptian Women: the Way Forward".

Ashton discussed Egypt’s transition with President Morsi and reiterated the EU’s support for Egypt. Ashton reaffirmed the EU’s support for a peaceful and orderly transition to a civilian and democratic government in Egypt. Ashton reiterated her desire to see "deep democracy" in Egypt, where there are sound institutions which ensure people’s rights of freedom of expression, religion and respect for minorities.

In her speech, Catherine Ashton called for a central role for women in Egypt’s democratic transition and new government. She hailed the part played by women in Egypt’s revolution………
