The Cachot (Dungeon) was a one room dwelling (16m²) with a very poor fireplace, so there were cold and dampness problems.
This is where Bernadette developed the asthma that eventually killed her at the young age of 35.
The Soubirous family fell into hard times in the winter of 1857, François (Bernadette’s father) was unemployed. The family moved to the Dungeon (ancient prison until 1824), where the family lived until the fall of 1858.
From this place, on the 11th of February of 1858, Bernadette goes to the “Massabielle” Cave to collect bones and dry wood. At that place she experienced a unique adventure: she will see the Virgin Mary, 18 times.
